On September 3, at the Forum “Charge and Earn: How ESS Are Changing the Rules of the Game in Ukraine’s Energy Market”, organized by the Solar Energy Association of Ukraine (SEAU) and JSC Market Operator, SEAU partner – DTEK Renewables – announced the launch of the largest energy storage system (ESS) complex in Ukraine.
Its official opening took place on September 11 with the participation of SEAU Chairman Vladyslav Sokolovskyi.
DTEK Group, together with the U.S. company Fluence, a global leader in energy storage, commissioned 200 MW of capacity with a total storage volume of 400 MWh. The new facilities, located in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, can supply electricity to 600,000 Ukrainian households for two hours. This represents a powerful resource for stabilizing the power system, reducing blackout risks, and increasing resilience under wartime conditions.
Construction lasted just six months – from March to August 2025 – with a total investment of €125 million. Such a large-scale project became possible thanks to international partnership and efficient implementation.
Minister of Energy of Ukraine Svitlana Hrynchuk emphasized:
“Amid massive attacks on Ukraine’s power system, the role of energy storage systems has become as fundamental as generation itself. The National Renewable Energy Action Plan to 2030 clearly defines the need for such facilities, and today we see strategic goals turning into reality. I am grateful to DTEK Group for their proactivity and to our American partners at Fluence for advanced technologies, where each new megawatt of storage acts as a shield for the entire power system. This means greater safety for Ukrainians and fewer risks of emergency blackouts.”
DTEK CEO Maksym Tymchenko noted:
“This is a historic step for Ukraine’s power system that will determine its development for years to come. We implemented it together with Fluence – the global leader in energy storage. In cooperation with our American partners, we are integrating cutting-edge technologies to make Ukraine’s energy system more reliable and resilient.”
Fluence CEO Julian Nebreda added:
“It is an honor to cooperate with DTEK on this landmark energy storage project. The extraordinary determination and efficiency demonstrated by DTEK in its implementation are truly inspiring. This achievement is a testament to resilience and a symbol of what can be accomplished through close international collaboration. Together, we are contributing to a stronger, more resilient, and decentralized energy system that will ensure Ukraine’s long-term stability.”
SEAU Chairman Vladyslav Sokolovskyi stressed:
“The commissioning of such a large-scale energy storage system cannot be overestimated. This tool will contribute to system balancing, enhance reliability, and accelerate our country’s integration into the European energy space. We sincerely congratulate our partner on this achievement and are proud that such projects are being implemented in Ukraine even in the most challenging times.”
The Solar Energy Association of Ukraine congratulates DTEK Renewables on the successful implementation of this large-scale project and thanks the company for its contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s energy security and resilience.
