The Head of the SEAU Investment Committee, Dmytro Lukomskyi, told UNIAN where it is most appropriate to install solar panels, how to correctly choose the location and tilt angle for maximum generation, and also shared practical advice for private households.
According to the expert, solar panels can be installed on the roof, on the façade of a building, on canopies, or other solid structures – the limitations are only technical and aesthetic. “Panels can even be mounted on a fence – the main thing is that the structure must be strong enough”, Lukomskyi noted.
The most efficient operation of the panels is achieved when set at the proper angle to the sun. “In summer, the panels are tilted at about 15°, in winter – up to 60°. For stable generation throughout the year, the optimal angle is around 30°”, he explained.
The expert emphasized the importance of avoiding shading and also highlighted the growing popularity of “east-west” systems, which provide a more even daily output.
Lukomskyi added that for apartments, installing panels on the balcony may be an option if it faces the sunny side, while for an entire multi-storey building the effect would be minimal due to limited surface area.
He also pointed out that most Ukrainians first invest in inverters and batteries, and only afterwards in solar panels – especially during winter.
Solar modules are certified under international standards and can withstand hail, but require regular cleaning. “A panel can serve 25-30 years or even longer – after 25 years it retains about 80% of its generation capacity”, the SEAU representative noted.
At the implementation stage, businesses may also use the Net Billing mechanism, which allows them to feed excess electricity into the grid and offset consumption during hours without generation.
SEAU supports the dissemination of practical guidance for private households and businesses on installing solar panels and developing distributed generation in Ukraine.
