Over 180 companies are testing new BESS arbitrage opportunities: results of the SEAU meeting held jointly with JSC “Market Operator”

The Solar Energy Association of Ukraine held an open meeting of the Electricity Market Committee together with its expert partner, Market Operator JSC, dedicated to the practical application of energy storage systems (BESS) in the electricity market and the opportunities offered by the new “BESS Economic Dispatch Platform”.

The meeting brought together representatives of generation companies, trading companies, investors, project developers, and other market participants, confirming strong interest in the integration of BESS into market mechanisms.

The event was moderated by Volodymyr Yevdokimov, Head of the Electricity Market Committee. The speaker was Oleksandr Havva, Acting CEO of Market Operator JSC.

During the session, Mr. Havva presented in detail the platform’s functionality, which enables modeling the economic performance of energy storage systems in the day-ahead market (DAM) and the intraday market (IDM).

The platform allows market participants to analyze hourly price fluctuations and determine optimal charging and discharging strategies for BESS – effectively enabling electricity arbitrage. This not only increases project profitability but also enhances the integration of storage into the market model.

According to the speaker, interest in the platform has already exceeded expectations: more than 240 companies have registered for testing, with over 180 actively using the tool. This dynamic indicates the rapid emergence of a new market segment focused on analytics, flexibility, and optimization of energy assets.

Special attention during the meeting was given to the techno-economic parameters of energy storage systems. In particular, it was emphasized that the conventional approach to BESS configuration requires reconsideration.

“The commonly used power-to-energy ratio of 1:2 is not optimal – our calculations show that configurations of 1:3 or even 1:4 are more efficient,” said Oleksandr Havva.

This means that to achieve maximum economic efficiency, investors should focus not only on capital expenditures but also on flexibility in energy management and participation in various market segments.

At the same time, the speaker emphasized that the modeling results should account for the dynamic nature of Ukraine’s electricity market:

“Our calculations are based on data from the past two years, which were shaped by specific market volatility conditions. These parameters may change in the future as the share of BESS and market competition increases”.

The presentation also demonstrated two approaches to using the platform:

  • automated mode – using optimization algorithms;
  • manual mode – with the ability to independently select charging/discharging periods.

This allows both experienced traders and new market entrants to adapt the tool to their business models and risk management strategies.

Participants actively discussed practical aspects of BESS deployment, including:

  • the impact of price volatility on profitability;
  • selection of optimal system configurations;
  • integration of BESS with generation (including solar PV);
  • prospects for scaling such solutions in the market.

As noted during the meeting by Oleksandr Havva, an assessment of the potential of BESS operation in the electricity market has already been published on the official website:

An update to this study, based on DAM price analysis for 2025, is expected to be released soon. It will present the results of modeling arbitrage strategies for various BESS configurations, including different power-to-energy ratios.

The Solar Energy Association of Ukraine emphasizes that the emergence of tools such as the BESS Economic Dispatch Platform is an important step toward the development of a полноценного flexibility market in Ukraine. Energy storage systems are gradually evolving from a supporting element into a fully-fledged market asset capable of generating stable revenue.
