On December 24, 2024, in Shenzhen, China, Huawei Digital Power and TÜV Rheinland jointly completed the safety evaluation of the energy storage platform “Huawei Smart String ESS with Grid Forming Function” (LUNA2000-4472 and LUNA2000-215 series).
As a result, Huawei became the first company in the world to receive the highest safety certificate for energy storage systems (ESS) from TÜV Rheinland.
TÜV Rheinland is a globally renowned independent organization specializing in testing, inspections, and certification. Building on existing standards and improving safety concepts, TÜV Rheinland developed a comprehensive safety classification system for energy storage installations, tailored to specific scenarios.
The safety classification consists of three levels:
1️⃣ Level 1 (Basic): The ESS complies with fundamental laws, regulations, standards, and safety requirements for market entry.
2️⃣ Level 2 (Plus): The ESS provides enhanced mechanical, electrical, thermal, and environmental protection, preventing fires caused by thermal runaway at the battery cell level.
3️⃣ Level 3 (Premium): The ESS prevents heat propagation at the battery module level even under extreme scenarios, such as fires caused by external factors, ensuring personnel safety.
TÜV Rheinland awarded Huawei the world’s first Premium Safety Certificate for ESS. This certification highlights the exceptional safety capabilities of the “Huawei Smart String ESS with Grid Forming Function” platform developed by Huawei Digital Power.
Zhou Tao, President of the Smart PV & ESS product line at Huawei Digital Power, expressed gratitude to TÜV Rheinland for awarding Huawei the industry’s first top-level safety certificate.

By upgrading traditional thermal runaway control from the container level to the cell level, Huawei Digital Power has set a new benchmark in ESS safety, providing a higher level of protection,” Zhou Tao stated.
