The Solar Energy Association of Ukraine held an open meeting of the Committee on Energy Storage Systems (BESS) titled \u201cVia negativa: The \u2018yes\u2019 that emerges through the \u2018no\u2019 for BESS projects\u201d.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
The event took place on November 4 in the format of a Zoom conference and brought together representatives of companies developing energy storage solutions in Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n The speaker was <\/span>Vadym Utkin, Advisor to the CEO of DTEK Renewables<\/b>, and the moderator was <\/span>Serhii Ruchko, Chair of the SEAU BESS Committee<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n At the core of the discussion was the practical <\/span>via negativa<\/b> approach, which helps build effective business models through analyzing typical mistakes and ineffective decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n During his presentation, Vadym Utkin emphasized that real profitability of BESS projects must be based on clear calculations and market statistics, not on short-term price spikes: <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI very much believe in volatility \u2014 it exists. But a business case must rely on real patterns, not on a few days with a 15,000 UAH price difference\u201d. <\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n The expert highlighted the importance of understanding <\/span>price decoupling<\/span><\/i> in the market, which creates new opportunities for arbitrage.<\/span><\/p>\n Special attention was paid to the question of storage system integration \u2014 <\/span>AC vs. DC connection. <\/b>According to the expert, under Ukrainian conditions, <\/span>standalone solutions currently appear more promising<\/b>, as they minimize operational risks and simplify entry into balancing and ancillary services markets.<\/span><\/p>\n The speaker also stressed the critical role of <\/span>technical warranties and contract terms<\/b>. Key parameters include:<\/span><\/p>\n These mechanisms, according to Vadym Utkin, are \u201cthe very essence of <\/span>via negativa<\/span><\/i>\u201d \u2014 protecting the investor from risks.<\/span><\/p>\n The discussion also covered degradation and RTE, which must be incorporated into financial models, as well as the role of trading. The speaker demonstrated real degradation charts from different manufacturers and emphasized that <\/span>RTE is not constant<\/b> \u2014 projects must account for declining efficiency. Mr. Utkin added: <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cA strong trader is your alpha. They are the one who can outperform the market and ensure project profitability\u201d.<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Following the meeting, participants noted that the Ukrainian BESS market is becoming increasingly mature \u2013 investors are moving from romantic expectations to precise technical, legal, and financial models. Today, the success of BESS projects is determined by deep data, high-quality processes, and a professional team.<\/span><\/p>\n SEAU thanks the speaker \u2013 Vadym Utkin, the moderator \u2013 Serhii Ruchko, and all participants for a meaningful discussion and practical insights.
