The Solar Energy Association of Ukraine (SEAU) highlights a key trend in the country\u2019s energy market: the growing integration of energy storage systems (ESS) into solar power plant (SPP) projects.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
According to Vladyslav Sokolovskyi, Chairman of the SEAU, 2024 marked the beginning of a systematic shift toward implementing ESS infrastructure within solar generation.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cToday, energy storage systems are no longer seen as optional. They are a necessity for ensuring the stable operation of SPPs, especially under conditions of grid instability,\u201d emphasized Vladyslav Sokolovskyi.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n One of the key incentives for investors is the competitive auctions announced by the National Energy Company \u201cUkrenergo\u201d for the procurement of ancillary frequency restoration services. These auctions are open to both current providers and new investors planning to develop ESS projects of 1 MW and above. Winners will receive euro-denominated contracts valid for five years, with a one-year delay in the start of service provision.<\/span><\/p>\n Sokolovskyi also noted that combining SPPs with ESS for participation in the wholesale electricity market is a promising strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn this model, the ESS can be charged during the day from solar generation or at night when electricity prices are at their lowest. Energy is then sold during peak hours at the highest price, allowing investors to generate stable returns,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n The expert added that the current cost of a \u201cSPP + ESS\u201d system is now comparable to that of standalone solar projects developed five years ago. Furthermore, when used for self-consumption, the financial viability of such solutions becomes even more attractive.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe now have surplus daytime generation that can be used at night or during demand peaks.
